Normally, babies grow their first teeth at 6 months, while some may appear as early as 3 months. Babies that are teething can be a stressful ordeal for many parents. Although some babies just seem to go through the teething process with ease and minimal pain, others do experience days of pain and discomfort.
Here are just a few tips from our Langley Dentists to help you soothe a teething baby:
Before your baby starts teething, practice massaging your child’s gums regularly and washing off the mouth after feeding. It will not only promote good oral health but will also let your baby get used to the feeling of having a mouth cleaned. And also, regular gum massage during the teething period will help in relieving the pressure on the gums and break up tissues of the gum as the teeth come out for a less painful teething.
Frozen Fruit or Veggies
You can put your baby’s favorite fruit such as apple, bananas, cucumber, peaches, etc. inside a mesh feeder or just create frozen delights from it and let it freeze in the freezer. These frozen fruits or veggies will help to ease the pain in their sore gums and the juice will keep them satisfied.
If you are scared about the potential choking hazard brought by frozen fruits or veggies, you can just try using a feeder. Net mesh feeders are handy devices that babies can suck onto, which can help ease their sore gums. Babies can chew on the feeder without the danger of choking.
Brew a Strong Cup of Chamomile Tea
After the tea is cool enough, get a piece of a washcloth and soak it in the tea and let the baby suck on the cloth. The teas natural effect is that it will help soothe the tummy of the baby and help them relax.
A lot of parents use topical gels to help soothe sore gums due to teething. However, the FDA has issued a warning regarding the use of teething gels for children below two years of age. Although there are risks, a lot of parents are still using these pain-relieving gels as with the notion of to follow prescription instructions and not exceeding the recommended dosage.
