Greeting cards are the kinds of things most people take wholly for granted. You take a trip out to any store…literally any these days…and take your pick from about a million mass-produced cards with generic greetings inside. The obvious bonuses being that they’re easy to get hold of and don’t cost the Earth, but at the same time there will always be those that swear by DIY card making.
But what’s the real appeal of going the homemade route? If cards are so cheap and easy to get hold of in general, is there really anything to gain by stocking up on card making supplies and doing it yourself? Well, you’re of course going to have to factor time into the equation, but if you’re willing to invest the necessary time, then the effort will always be well worth it.
Think about it:
First of all, it might be safe to say that most adults won’t have gotten down and dirty with craft supplies since they were kids. As such, you won’t possible be able to remember how much fun it can be to get well and truly stuck into something like card-making. It’s so amazingly satisfying and enjoyable that chances are you’ll be won over in an instant. And speaking of kids, there’s nothing to stop you getting the whole family involved and turning your homemade greeting cards project into a veritable production line! It’s free labour and they’ll love it!
Explore Your Creativity
You won’t know how enjoyable it is to have a creative outlet until you actually give yourself one – it’s as simple as that. For so many first timers, it’s not until they start churning out a few cards that they realise they had a fair few talents locked away that they never even knew about. It could be drawing, painting, calligraphy, paper cutting or the fine art of gluing glitter onto card – really anything across the board. And once you’ve found something you’re good at, you’re bound to want to do a hell of a lot more of it.
A Gift that Means Something
Moving on to the really important stuff now, any gift at all has at least some meaning but it’s hard to receive any kind of generic card off the shelves these days and be totally blown away. The reason being that it doesn’t exactly take a great deal of thought to go out and buy a card, nor is there any real meaning behind picking at random. Whichever way you look at it, the card you buy was not made specifically for the person you’ll be giving it to, but rather to sell in large volumes for thousands of people. As such, it might be cute and pleasant enough, but in terms of actual meaning, store-bought cards don’t bring much to the table. By contrast, homemade cards mean more than most everyday gifts ever could.
Say What You Want to Say
Following on from the above, while the card itself speaks volumes you’ll often find that it’s the words inside that really do the talking. Once again, if you pick up a card from the store that contains a greeting, message or rhyme written by someone else, this doesn’t exactly add up to the most thoughtful gift on Earth. After all, it’s not really you saying anything at all. By contrast however, when you go about making your own card and put 100% of your own words across its interior, you’re giving a gift that both means something and carries your own personal message. You don’t have to be a poet or a literary genius to have incredible impact either – you just need to make sure it comes from you and is written for them…simple as that.
Last but not least, while there’s always going to be certain costs involved in making your own cards, they cannot be compared with those of buying cards over the space of a single year. The better cards on the shelves these days cost a few quid or so, which isn’t all that bad until you find yourself having to buy a minimum of one a month, maybe even more. If as an alternative you were to use this money to stock up on card making gear to keep at home, chances are you’d be able to knock up about three times as many cards as you would with the cash you’d usually use to buy them. You can make them in advance, stockpile them and have a ready-to-go supply for the future.
And as mentioned above, the value of each and every one will be quite simply priceless.
