Retro-reflective Road Studs
Accidents always happen on the road for many reasons. It can be because of harsh weather conditions, worn out road conditions, increased traffic volumes, and many others. Accidents happen, but in a worst case scenario, it can lead to death. As a road user, it is one of your concerns to be safe whenever you are out driving. There are things that you cannot control while doing so, but there are things you can do to prevent accidents to occur.
One of the things done to prevent accidents, especially in adverse weather conditions and at night is the installment of road studs. Road studs are important tools for traffic safety. It can be permanent or temporary, but should be of high level and offer long term retro reflectivity and should have excellent adhesion to the road’s surface.
The two main types of road studs are the permanent and temporary. As the name suggests, road studs can be temporarily put on the road surface and it can also be put permanently for road safety assurance. Permanent road studs are divided into two subtypes. That is the snow-ploughable raised and recessed. Snow-ploughable has prisms that are set in metal casings all over it. The metal castings of snow-ploughable are designed to protect the prisms from snowplough and vehicular damage. It is installed in a cut made by a drop saw using 51 cm radius blades that surrounds some 46 cm radius blades. Recessed reflective road studs, on the other hand, are installed in grooves cut by a specially designed cutting head.
Temporary road studs are road studs that are usually used in work zones so that when the work zone is to be altered and the road studs are to be removed, it will only leave minimal damage to the road surface. Aside from temporary and permanent road studs, there are various types of road stud that were manufactured to better improve road safety. Such road studs are:
- TPU Lane Divider
- Ceramic road stud
- Round plastic road stud
- Fiberglass road stud
- Solar road stud
- Aluminum road stud
- Solar road studs
- LED road studs
These road studs are only a few of the new types of road studs used these days. Each one of them has their own characteristics that will differentiate them and will provide better use depending on its purpose. They are improved and each with their own set of advantages. It is especially useful if road studs that are used are those that are highly reflective, especially at night and during wet seasons.
Road studs are an essential road safety device. These are proven to reduce the number of collisions and casualties on the road. Road markings like road studs offer the best and simplest aid for drivers. Without these road markings, drivers will be driving blind on the road and are at a greater risk of accidents. Road markings should be installed properly to ensure that they effectively aid drivers on the road. Loose or improperly installed road studs can drastically affect the number of accidents and casualties that should have been avoided.
