Survive Hot Summer Nights
Summer days are something all of us look forward to. A day in the beach with family and friends, riding a bike, lazing around in the sun etc. Ah, what a wonderful feeling isn’t it? But, summer has a mean side to it too. The nights! We are talking about the real mean days with the highest humidity and it ends up being literally impossible to sit comfortably and do anything.
The obvious solution which might be coming to your mind is “get an air conditioner mate!” Yes, these modern day gadgets have an optimum sleep temperature and give a nice boost to have a cozy good night’s sleep. But it does a mean thing to your energy bill. It hikes it up to an enormous amount and you end up paying a lot more than you bargained for. So, what would an environmental friendly and budget conscious person do to keep them calm during the hot summer nights?
Living without an AC seems horrifying to young people, but hey, our grandparents did it all the time! So, why can’t we? Here are a few simple, yet effective ways to keep you cool and healthy during hot summer nights:
Do not use hot satin, silk or polyester sheets during summer! It just makes the bed warmer than it normally is. Save it for the cooler nights. Choose cotton or light linen which will promote a lot more ventilation to your bed and keep you cool.
Have you tried sticking your sheets into the cooler or fridge or freezer for a few minutes before you go to sleep? Keep it inside a plastic bag and keep it for a few minutes inside the freezer. Granted it will not keep you warm throughout the night, but, yes, it will give you respite for a few hours at least.
Hot water bottle is a very useful apparatus if you are conscious enough to use it accordingly. During summer, fill it with cold water and it will provide for a bed – friendly ice pack!
A Bit of Creativeness
Some people suggest keeping the fan in the opposite direction to suck out the hot air from your room. Adjust the ceiling fan to run counter clockwise to prevent sucking in the heat from the roof to your room.
The Egyptian Method
Egyptians used damp sheets during hot summer nights to keep their body cooler while they slept. Yes, it does sound a bit uncomfortable but try it, maybe that will be what works for you. Keep a warm towel over the damp cloth to avoid catching a cold.
Try wearing loose fitting clothes rather than figure hugging clothes during hot summer nights. Cotton clothes will be the most appropriate summer night wear and will help you remain cool during the hot nights. Wearing tight clothes during summer just adds up to your level of discomfort.
