Its extracts and fruit rind are commonly used for traditional recipes and food preparations in some Southeast Asian countries, Burma, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. The rind and extract of Garcinia gummi-gutta is a known curry condiments in India and an essential souring ingredient in Southern Thailand variant known as kaeng som.

He promoted garcinia extract as “an exciting breakthrough in natural weight loss” and his endorsements have led to substantial increase in the product.
